IMPROMPTU SPEAKING
TOPIC: HOW DOES IT WORK ?
For this
impromptu speaking exercise, please select a moderately-complex
device or process and describe the way it works
(or describe
steps in the procedure) to our group in five minutes.
Your introduction should observe the key elements of an introduction
(
http://worldtraining.net/intros.htm
) and the body should make effective
use of
transitions. ( http://worldtraining.net/transit.gif
)
If after
rehearsing, you realize that you require more than five minutes,
you
may have selected an overly complex item or procedure – or you
may
need to do more summarizing. Also, you may decide that you
simply
do not know anything worthwhile enough to demonstrate to
your classmates.
Usually, people underestimate their
own skills and resources that could be
shared with others. The
ideal topic is one that you are passionate about already or
is so
interesting that you can find reasons to fake the enthusiasm required
for an
effective performance.
A useful topic could
be some skill or expertise learned as a team player, long-time
enthusiast ,
or
employee; the fact that someone will pay you for your experience
satisfies the
credibility requirement in our consumer
culture.
Another suitable
source derives from sports or other hobby pursuits with some
restrictions due to logistics. For example, the topic, “learn
to swim,” would not
be a suitable topic choice for you
(even if you were on the swimming team) as
we can not take
our class to the pool.
If after
careful analysis you do not know what to select for a topic,
find
something
(scroll down page on some browsers) to
learn right now that
you
can demonstrate to our class in five minutes. Be sure you reserve
this topic
as someone else might also learn something new just
like you chose.
Email me ASAP to reserve your choice.
Get started
immediately. The deadline is just a few weeks away and part
of
your overall evaluation will be how you deal
with deadlines.
Most
people who receive low grades for this assignment tend to be
people
who chose their topic too late, people who sound like they are
reluctant to do
the assignment, or chose not wisely.
Find something you
can be enthusiastic about or
one that you can
fake enthusiasm for.
[ “The secret of acting is sincerity. If you can fake that, you've got it made.” George Burns ]
How To Topic Suggestions:
Some seemingly difficult topics that have met the prescribed limit:
How to tie a necktie or cravat (usually the half and full Windsor knot)
How to Make A
Smoothie, OR Virgin Mary (a bloody Mary w/o the alcohol!) Pina
Colada, Mojito
(amplify benefits of the ingredients for drink and
blender if required) discuss temperance
How to create the Two most useful knots
MORE “How To”:
to fix a flat tire – you need to get a scissors jack and handle at least
to register for voting -- get forms and explain “reasons why” as well as basic info such as where voting occurs and registration functions
to make an origami swan, crane, etc. from paper (choose only one) -- use 8x11 sheet of typing paper cut to 8.5x8.5; get ONE VERY large sheet (such as from a flip chart) and cut into a square; pre-fold swan or crane to form creases
to play the game of tennis – requires a racket and ball at a minimum. (don’t forget to explain “love”)
to snowboard : a snow board
to play golf: 3
basic clubs; I have the plastic Whiffle golf ball
(if you know
the basics and remember to amplify the business benefits of golf)
to play volley ball: get a volleyball !
to play handball – the quintessential New Yorker sport. You can learn to play this quickly!
to play badminton (don’t forget to explain “shuttlecock”)
to play soccer
to play cricket
to play basketball (don’t forget to explain origin of the term “basket-ball”)
to perform CPR: dummy and mask
to take blood pressure (requires props such as sphygmomanometer)
to dress for an
interview (male and female business suits - find a willing prop
“partner”)
AKA – google meme “Dress for Success”
to manage a
formal business dinner (aim for a career where you expect
to
attend a formal dinner - this includes sports award events)
to drive a stick shift car; using a small plunger and tennis ball for stick .
to dance (waltz - basic box step) Many formal dinners and weddings are followed by dancing in the evening
to change a baby's diaper (you must use a baby doll or stuffed animal – no babies allowed!)
to order dim-sum without looking like a tourist (you must summarize and localize info)
to play poker Five Card Draw or Texas Hold’em Note http:worldtraining.net/poker.html for legal defense. Benefit: You can learn about the need to manage your “tells” (inadvertent body language signs that betray your overt negotiating strategy) (only mistakenly named “game of chance” permitted as it involves negotiating skills rather than blind luck; if you choose this topic you must relate benefits to negotiating skills for business)
Still no ideas???
A good place to
find ideas for a demonstration speech is http://www.ehow.com/
. More potential resources listed after the checklist below. This
web site gives you step-by-step
instructions in many areas.
Note that some topics are unsuitable for
our course objectives or
unworkable for logistical reasons.
